My father
died on January 8th very
suddenly at the age of 79. He and my
mother were a week away from putting
their home on the market and moving to
Florida for part of the year. They had
already researched condos in Ft.
Lauderdale and were ready to buy as soon
as their New Hampshire home sold.
My
mother, brave and bold, decided to go
ahead with their plan to sell, only she
would try to find a condo in her own
town, where she could maintain her
independence and still be close to us.
An
already overwhelming and heartbreaking
task, she decided to make it easier on
herself and make a wish. She wished for
the moon: that the buyer would find her
(to avoid advertising costs and real
estate brokers) and, she added, “I would
like to be out of the house before the
lawn needs mowing, sometime in early
May.”
One week
after she made her wish, she delivered a
casserole dish to a neighbor who had
attended the funeral. “We are interested
in buying your house,” they said. “Our
home is too big for us now that the kids
are older, and yours is just the perfect
size and layout.” No real estate broker,
not even the full services of a lawyer.
The neighbors were so gracious and
agreed to take over the house in early
May, so that my mother would have time
enough to find a new home.
We began
the search immediately, but she already
knew where she was going. A beautiful
condominium in her own town that she and
my father had fallen in love with during
their searches together. It was a new
construction and wouldn’t be ready until
May.
We spent
the next few months going through old
boxes in the attic and packing her up.
In the end, she was obliged to mow the
grass one time before she moved! I am so
filled with gratitude that our wishes
and prayers were heard and that my
mother was granted this graceful
transition!

After we
had our third child, I began to notice
that our 4-Runner just wasn’t going to
be big enough. Not with trips to the
mountains to ski, needing to pack all
our gear and everything. I started
looking around and decided that a
Suburban was the thing to get. We
couldn’t afford to buy new, so I made a
wish that a blue Suburban would appear
for us. Once my wish was made, I knew it
would happen. Even the kids would see a
suburban on the road and say “We’re
gonna get one of those someday!”
We looked
for a couple of weeks and didn’t see
much of anything. Then, finally, in the
classifieds, appeared my beautiful blue
Suburban for a price that couldn’t be
beat! It all worked out great, thanks to
a little wish!

The most
recent thing that has happened to me was
that my daughter and her friend came
home 2 weeks ago for a visit and her
friend had a pocketbook that I thought
was adorable. I asked her where she got
it and she said her Aunt made it for
her. I looked at it and figured out how
she made it because my daughter wanted
one. I had asked for a way to make more
$ with something creative that I enjoyed
and here it is. I have sold 14 bags in
2 weeks and now have made 30 more and
I'm selling them at home parties for
some friends and we'll see where it goes
from here. Each one is like a birth to
me I can't wait to see what it looks
like.

Living
in New York City, in small apartments
and studios, I dreamed of having a real
dining room table. I pictured my family
gathered around it at Thanksgiving, my
friends at dinner parties, my loved ones
at breakfast. I could see the table, set
with my fancy china, or my Santa Fe
pottery plates and mugs. A bowl of
fruit, a brightly woven tablecloth, and
now and then, I would see it with a vase
of fresh flowers. For me, a dining room
table was a symbol of being settled, of
having a real home.
Finding a
flat in New York with a dining room is a
miracle in and of itself, but the really
amazing thing is that it happened
without me really knowing it. One day, I
woke up, and found myself in the middle
of my dream, sitting at my table with my
dearest friends, feeling all those
wonderful and wished for feelings of
comfort and home.

Boy, was
I late for work! I had to drive my son
to school, get gas, and then join the
throngs heading for Boston at rush hour.
I needed help in a big way. There was no
way that I was going to make it on time
for my 9:30 meeting. So, the only thing
I could think of to do was to make a
wish. I wished for help to get me to
work on time.
After
dropping my son at school and filling up
my tank, I hit the usually congested
highway, and to my great amazement,
found that the traffic was moving at a
fast clip, with no delays. My normally
one hour commute was reduced to half an
hour! I made it to my meeting with time
to spare.

All three
kids needed shoes. I couldn’t put if off
one more day. As we walked into our
favorite shoe store, I looked around
hopefully for the “Buy One, Get the
Second Pair at Half Price” sign that was
displayed every now and then. No luck.
Not even one “Sale” sign in the place.
Too
bad, I thought. It sure would be
nice if they were running that special
today.
The kids
and I shopped for about ten minutes,
trying on sneakers and fancy shoes, when
the sales clerk came over. “My
supervisor just called to say that we
are starting our ‘Buy One, Get the
Second Pair at Half Price’ sale right
now, so make sure you get each of
your kids and extra pair of shoes
today.”
I looked
at her blankly and asked her to repeat
what she had just said. I couldn’t
believe it! “Don’t you usually get some
notice before you run a sale?”
“Yes,”
she said in frustration. “I didn’t have
time to put up any of our signs or get
prepared in anyway. They have never done
this before.” She rambled off to
the back room to look for her banners
and advertisements. We bought six pairs
of shoes!
